In this intense political season, many people tend to focus mainly on the “big” races for governor or congress. However, it’s important also to pay attention to the “smaller” races–who is running for local office. Local elected officials, like your city council or school board, make decisions that directly impact your life, and the life of your family.
It is the mission of the Fullerton Observer newspaper to keep our readers informed about who is running in these local races. Our political correspondent Jane Rands has compiled a list of who is running in the following important races: Fullerton City Council, Fullerton School District (both elementary and high school boards), and North Orange County Community College District Trustee.
Here are the candidates running in these races.
Fullerton City Council
In 2016, Fullerton voters approved a measure changing the way we do city council elections. We changed from an “at large” voting system (in which all residents vote for the same pool of candidates) to a “district” voting system (in which residents vote for candidates to represent their area of the city). Fullerton is now divided into five districts. Here’s the map.
In the 2018 election, only districts 3 and 5 will be up for election. If you live in district 1, 2, or 4–you’ll have to wait until 2020.
