The Blackface Of Liberty
An Op Ed by Marlin DuJuan
In the year 1865, the 15th amendment was passed granting all men, including African American men, the right to vote. What should have been a celebratory moment for all Americans certainly was not for Black people since that’s when the true fight for the freedom to vote began! As more African Americans spoke up, voter suppression became a trend especially within Southern States. Voting measures were put in place such as literacy tests and poll taxes to discourage Blacks from participating in the elections while poor White voters were excused from having to pay such taxes and meet the intelligence requirements. This eventually led to the decline of voter registration amongst the Black community that exists to this very day. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law in 1965 which removed those restrictions that were meant to stop any election practices that denied any American citizen the right to vote based on their race or ethnicity. This recognition itself took nearly 100 years to truly grant ALL men the right to freely vote.
Well it’s 2018, I’m Black, and I don’t vote. Now, I know that you’re thinking that after all that oppression our ancestors had to suffer for just fill out a ballot “why aren’t you involved politically”? Simple. I’ve lost hope in the government. Our president, our congressmen, our governors ,councilmen, and their wonderful mascots the donkey and the elephant! Yes I said mascots! Because that’s exactly what I think they are! Brand names for teams that supposedly represent the protection of our freedom by way of constitutional rights.Pick a team, any team, and it doesn’t matter.
The Red team aka Republicans, which I personally tend to lean towards agreeing with, promises you safety, protection of individual rights and regulation of big government. Nice pitch isn’t it?! And now the Blue team aka the Democrats, who want to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all communities. Both teams invitations sound so warm and promising for the people but yet government corruption, racial inequality, big business bailouts, civil unrest, increased taxes, bureaucratic scrutiny from laws and statutes that actually limit opportunity are running rampant not only in our beautiful state of California but nationwide. Doesn’t sound so “warm” now does it?
Their hypocrisy makes me believe that these supposedly differing political parties are in fact opposites of the same coin. They both give you nothing but false promises to live upon! The Red team claims to protect individual rights but not the individual’s right to marry who they want or grant a woman the personal right to have an abortion of an unwanted pregnancy. All the while chanting “Let’s minimize government control!” but promoting measures that support the building of a wall on the border using our tax dollars. The wonderful community loving Blue team claims to build up urban communities but only gives just enough for the individual to be comfortable. Lulling them into a false sense of security while Black men get shot and killed by rogue cops, some of who are democrats I’m sure, but also goes to rally to do away with our second amendment right by way of more government regulation.
Something is missing here. Ah, I know what it is, autonomy! Autonomy equals self governance for those of you who don’t know! I believe ‘We The People’ gave power to these external entities because we fear that we aren’t capable of governing ourselves, our state and unfortunately our nation. We fail to realize that when you give an external entity too much power without proper checks and balances, they start enacting policies that truly don’t benefit the soul or the people. We, The People!
I mean after all, aren’t ‘We The People’ the ones that created the powers that be as well as grant them the authority to govern us? Now, I’m not saying that all political parties are cynical minded and truly don’t represent the people. I believe that meeting and connecting with like-minded self governing people can be a true benefit for the individual! The signing of the Declaration of Independence was to ensure our freedoms as self governing people to come together and replace a faulty government. ‘We The People’ have the right and the authority to govern ourselves, protect ourselves, and teach ourselves by way of our ancestors through knowledge of self!
After doing a little research to find out what political party would share this same sentiment and would stand for moral independence to self directing freedom, I came across, drum roll please, The Libertarian Party! “A Party of Principle” is their slogan and even though it seems quite simple it’s not some slogan that sounds like an overrated soda commercial. In a sense that’s really how any government or political party should be. I consider myself a man of principle, and I came to that conclusion because I believe I act with good moral judgment. I read the Libertarian party’s’ platform and it states “We defend each person’s right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from the government or any authoritarian power.” Wow!! Just that small bit of information says a mouthful and screams out to me much louder than any other party has before!
I believe this party understands the full and complete concept of autonomy! I learned much of this first hand from speaking with my friend who’s like a brother to me and is currently running as a Libertarian candidate for California Governor. Meet Nickolas Wildstar! This melanated man, a Milwaukee Wisconsin transplant, is as uncomfortable as I am, who’s a native, with California’s societal shortfalls especially its impact on the Black community. He has himself witnessed, and researched, the corruption of our justice system, income inequality, racial injustices, the effects of crony capitalism on our free market, all of which he believes has impeded the natural growth of our God given right to manifest destiny. Nickolas Wildstar, with his cool yet fiery demeanor, truly believes in the principles of freedom and liberty. I mean liberty literally should’ve been his middle name! He expresses his beliefs and ideals to the core and lives a life that is an example of how they correlate with libertarian party. His utopic thoughts and impassioned approach promotes self thinking such as “are we truly free?” His liberated mindset and extreme confidence inspired me to question my own stance on voting and politics. I know that the gubernatorial primary elections are on June 5th 2018, but I have to admit that I’m still undecided. But were I to vote, which I may, my vote would without a doubt go to Wildstar for California Governor!
Wildstar challenges others as well as educates the masses of what true freedom can mean for the state of California through his many social media outlets. Having experienced many of the injustices mentioned, which encouraged his in depth understanding of law, I believe that he is the voice for the Libertarian Party. A voice that understands the wants and needs of every individual seeking autonomy regardless of color, education status, religion or even sexual orientation. If elected, he would be the first African American Governor of California! Imagine how that would encourage the Black community and many other minorities to educate themselves on our current socioeconomic state, how it affects them, and what to do about it. I believe Wildstar can reignite that passion that our founding fathers had when they envisioned a free world.
Larry Sharpe is another African American man,who is also a libertarian, seeking to take the Governor’s’ seat for the state of New York in 2018. Sharpe shares the same sentiment and passion of liberty as Wildstar and the combination presents a tremendous opportunity for the liberation movement to finally break ‘We The People’ free from its captivity by the 2 party system. It’s very exciting to know that the liberating prospects of freedom are not just limited to the sunny state of California but even extends across the country to New York as well. I see this as just the beginning of ‘We The People’ coming together to form a new world of true unity, peace and most importantly freedom.
Imagine a self governed, free thinking society that what would be the result of such a situation. Now I know this perfect utopian world won’t exactly happen overnight and I understand the saying of how Rome wasn’t built in a day could hold true to this conceptual thinking but with dedication, and a collective effort of truly liberated minds to manifest such reality, who’s to say that this change couldn’t happen suddenly.
If you can for just a moment, imagine a state operating on the principle of self governance and how it could possibly create a liberation of not only the mind but of our entire environment. If California were to thrive on the philosophy of liberty, the same philosophy of the Libertarian party, wouldn’t we all become Libertarians? That thought alone would put an end to gambling away our future on choosing between the lesser of two evils who’s opposing promises equal the same results. As Libertarians, we would all naturally set aside the many differences that have held us back and set us apart, and focus on the uniting principles that sustains us. It could even usher in the change from a service based economy to that of a resource based economy which is what Wildstar plans to do.
An economy where we use the earth’s’ natural resources, such as land, water and sunlight to satisfy life’s necessities for power, food, and shelter. An economy in which all of our goods and services are made available to everyone without the need for money, credit cards or any other financial system built off of servitude and debt. Our primary focus as a united race, would then be on the welfare of all humans and environmental preservation, as it should be. An abundance of resources made available to all and not just those who can afford it or those within a certain tax bracket. One person who provided this holistic government inspiration to Wildstar is Jacque Fresco, founder of the Venus Project, which is an example of a future that would be beneficial to the entire world and every person living on this planet. It’s time that ‘We The People’ take back what’s morally, logically, and rightfully ours and we can do this just by acting on what links us together and electing those whose principles are in alignment with life, love and most importantly liberty! As Marcus Garvey said, “Any leadership that teaches you to depend upon another race is a leadership that will enslave you!”
There I said it. Take it or leave it!
